At a time when the fashion industry is struggling to find its voice in political movements, Proenza Schouler has emerged as one of the smartest, most radical brands to take on an activist role. In stead of creating a campaign to launch their Fall 2017 collection (which, by the way, is magnificent), the label teamed up with female photographer and young visionary Harley Weir to shoot a cast of 30 diverse, outspoken women in support of Planned Parenthood. These women include Couturesque favourites like Hari Nef, Paloma Elsesser, Hanne Gabby Odiele, and Sage Adams.
Planned Parenthood provides more than 4.9 million people with healthcare, birth control, and sex education every year. The organization faces significant funding cuts under the Trump administration and has received widespread attention in the media, with particular respect from the fashion sector; the CFDA produced buttons in support of PP at fashion week in February, for example.
In a statement on social media, the brand explained that "in recent months, Proenza Schouler has been driven by a need to stand up with organizations that fight for the causes we believe in. Now more than ever we feel it is important to use our voice and platform to speak out in support of the things we care deeply about. Planned Parenthood means so much to the women who work at our company, and to the community Planned Parenthood serves in New York City and beyond."
